VR CREATORS SERIES will happen every 3 months.
There may be no better way to show off the possibilities of virtual reality than by exploring the cosmos. We’ve already seen some early space experiences, like Adr1ft, but you can expect artists to keep experimenting as the VR ecosystem matures. Fistful of Stars, which debuts this week at SXSW, is an ambitious attempt at pushing VR space experiences forward. It launches you into the heart of the Orion Nebula, where you see a star being born up close. It’s the sort of thing space nerds have always dreamed of, but it’s also intriguing enough for anyone to enjoy (and hopefully learn a thing or two).
Fistful of Stars started out as part of The Hubble Cantata, a live performance that took place in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park last summer. Six thousand people in the audience wore Google Cardboard headsets and stepped through the Orion Nebula as a way to show how VR, something that’s typically seen as isolating, could also be a social group experience. While they were on their virtual field trip, they were serenaded by a 20-piece orchestra and 100-person choir. It’s a fairly short VR experience, but Fistful of Stars still makes a big impact.
Testimony is an interactive documentary for virtual reality that shares the stories of five survivors of sexual assault and their journey to healing. Beyond just a film, Testimony is an advocacy platform to allow the public to bear witness to those who have been silenced. The Brock Turner case, Bill Cosby’s sexual assaults and Bill O’Reilly’s harassment of women are three recent examples that have helped create the perfect storm of public outcry over sexual assault and issues around consent. Despite persistent victim-shaming and the discounting of their experiences, survivors are increasingly coming forward, empowering one another to become agents of change and hope. Testimony is an interactive investigation that aims to tackle the obstacles women and men still need to overcome in order to report the assault and confront the legal system. The goal of Testimony is to inspire those who have been silenced to speak out, while building courage amongst survivors. Witness these powerful testimonies and help us shatter the silence.
Rose Colored, written and directed by the much-lauded Adam Cosco and produced by INVAR Studios, a relatively new VR company with big ambitions (Elizabeth Koshy and Vincent Edwards are the credited Producers).
Rose Colored is reminiscent of independent films of the late 1990s/early 2000s (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, et al.), wherein technology allows characters to question the nature of romantic relationships in heightened relief.
“Rose Colored is a story that posits the question that, as we allow technology into our life and affect our perception, what is going to happen?” said Cosco. “Are we going to enter the world where we can’t even tell the difference between fiction and reality?”
Fantasynth is an upcoming VR music experience for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive that takes you on a surreal ride through an abstract world of sharp geometric shapes and eye-catching neon lights. Pulsing to the futuristic beat of track Chez Nous from French electronic musician N’to, Fantasynth is a work of pure imagination, one that is just begging to be longer, weirder and more intense.
The music experience was created by Brighton, UK-based HelloEnjoy, an indie studio known for their commercial 3D work across a range of big names including Disney, Sony, Samsung, Swarovski, Absolut, Interscope, Lexus, Nissan and Peugeot.
Originally conceived for the 2015 Oculus Mobile VR Jam, Fantasynth was at first a bright, low poly world that utilized only a handful of colors, no doubt created out of the necessity to maintain a consistent frame rate on the Gear VR mobile platform for which it was designed.
